Celebrating the centennial of the New York to Paris race, our team will retrace the route of the winning Thomas Flyer in our own 1908-vintage White automobile. Our White “Learning Journey” racer is currently under construction and expected to be race-ready by early 2007. Our journey will trace the Thomas Flyer's route as closely as possible, stopping in the same towns on the same dates — but with some important planned detours (and that is why we call our entry in the race, “A Learning Journey”). Dedicated stops at schools along the way will allow our team to make presentations to students stimulating hands-on learning, online communication and international tracking with other schools as we move through different countries and cultures along the route. We hope to inspire student interest in history, geography, culture, and adventure. A unique multimedia presentation, “One Hundred Years Ago Today”, will include a history of each specific town as well as a comparison of life in the present to that when the Thomas Flyer passed through in 1908. Students will experience the driver's arrival and can ask questions, receive autographs, or perhaps even take a short ride in this historic vehicle. This brief visit will allow our “Learning Journey” partners to present information on their service sponsorship and support for the project. After the brief stop at each school, our car and team will depart to continue their remarkable round-the-world journey. Some team partners may remain to help establish communications to the project site and to the other schools along the route. Project involvement goes beyond each school visit. This website will track the journey as it happens with daily updates with audio, photographs, and video whenever possible. In addition, we will provide information and contact for each school visited around the world. Not only will students learn about their own town a century ago, but other towns, people, geography and cultures as well — past and present. Students will be able to communicate with these other schools to compare reactions and to foster international awareness and pride. |
